PS20: Introduction to Functional Safety for Supervisors

Recommend or Share:

In this course “Introduction to Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)”, the basic guidelines will be seen to understand the need to apply the requirements of current international standards for the design and implementation of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), as well as to understand the concept of life cycle of SIS.

During the course you will look at the basic concepts of SIS design, including specification of safety requirements, qualitative and quantitative risk assessment techniques, determination of safety functions (SIF), assignment of the level of safety integrity, SIS architectures, and briefly the installation, validation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of SIS.

At the end of the course, attendees will understand the how, when and why of the need to implement Safety Instrumented Systems in process plants.

Topics:

  • What is Functional Safety?
  • Definition of SIS.
  • Functional Safety Standards.
  • IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 Safety Lifecycle
  • Risk Assessment
  • Quantitative Risk Analysis
  • Safety Instrumented Functions – SIF
    • Definition of SIL
    • Assigning Security Integrity Levels
    • SIL Verification
  • SIS Design
  • Validation \ Verification
  • Installation, Mechanical Testing and Pre-Commissioning Acceptance Test
  • Operation, Maintenance and Test Procedures
  • Change Management

  • Knowledge of the key concepts of Functional Safety standards.
  • Understand the need to analyze Process Risks.
  • Select the SIS components according to the required SIL.
  • Understanding the requirements for hardware evaluations in the context of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards.
  • Description of the decision tools for SIL verification and their implications in the design of the Security System.

Duration:

4 hours, virtual format.

Course language:

Spanish and English.

Who is it for?

The course is aimed at those who have responsibilities within the scope of the IEC 61511 standard. In particular:

  • Process plant managers who have responsibility for the management of functional safety involving Safety Instrumented Systems.
  • Control and instrumentation engineers, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers who work in plants that use safety instrumented systems.
  • System integrators of safety instrumented systems.

Prior knowledge

No previous knowledge of Safety Instrumented Systems is required to attend the course accredited by certificates of attendance at Functional Safety of Processes courses.

Certificates

  • Certificate of attendance accrediting the key topics covered in the course.
  • Attendees who wish to do so can take an exam for the certification of the knowledge acquired.

Recognitions:

All participants who meet the course requirements and successfully pass the final exam with a good grade will be awarded a Digital Badge. The digital Badge certifies that the participant has attended the PS20 training course and has completed the final evaluation test with a good score, verifying that said participant has assimilated the new knowledge.
